ACROSS THE COUNTRY PEOPLE THINK IT MATTERS TO SAVE THIS HOUSE

"As a fan of the design ethic and attention to quality embodied in Apple Computer's products and Pixar's films I am doubly disheartened by this lack of understanding for the quality of design of this home's architecture as well as the wanton destruction of it in order to meet some other aim.
" A man with Jobs' creativity, drive, and wealth can surely meet his goals of having a residence of his liking close to his place of business without requiring the destruction of the Jackling Estate."
Alan S. Levy, AICP
Detroit, Michigan

"Scholars, architects, and devotees of this seminal period in California architecture are enriched by the abiding existence of such an achievement as the Jackling House, built on Woodside soil, and the term historic resource can be seen as describing an ACTIVE and ongoing contribution to the life and very identity of the Town of Woodside."
William H. Cary, former Preservation Director for the New York City
Landmarks Preservation

"I think that it is just awful that Mr. Jobs wants to destroy the Jackling house. It seems to me that Woodside should put a stop to this. I hope that the house is saved. I did send Jobs an e mail and told him that he was acting like a spoiled child. "
E.R.Heinzer

". . . Mr. Jobs' request for demolition of the historic Jackling House in order to build a different style of single family residence is akin to a proposal to plow up a field of unique endangered plants in order to sow a new garden. New gardens can be planted on other ground."
Susan Brandt-Hawley, attorney, authority on California Environmental
Quality Act hired as counsel to the Town of Woodside

"My wife Mary and I have become acutely aware of the threatened demolition of the Jackling House on Mountain Home Road. We were lucky enough to live in that house (on the second floor) from 1965, when I arrived as an Assistant Professor at Stanford... For the stately yet unpretentious elegance of that house, seated so perfectly in its gorgeous natural and cultivated surroundings, we have the brightest, happiest memories imaginable We simply want to register our fervent hope that this house may be preserved and well maintained. We've never lived in anything like it-both sumptuous and comfortable. It defines Woodside for us."
Yours sincerely,
John Felstiner
Professor of English, Stanford University

"When I saw the Jackling house and what Jobs' neglect had done to it it brought tears to my eyes... I would be very happy to join and support your organization. I, too, believe you have a very strong case to stop this demolition. I had feared that no one would have the guts and money to go up against Steve Jobs. Thank you so much."
--- Barbara Wood, supporter of the lawsuit to stop demolition of the the Jackling House in Woodside, California.

"In spite of the willful neglect of the house, it is still in good structural condition It was solidly built with double wall construction, reinforcement, copper gutters and even has copper pipes in the outer wal to prevent the bougainillea from freezing in the winter. It is interesting to note the a that the accessory buildings remain in excellent condition. Anything short of rehabilitation of the Jacklinjg house in its current location would compromise the historic merits of the house and site, wand would result in a major loss of ap piece of Woodside's history."
Letter from the Woodside History Committee, Oct 28 2004

"The silicon valley boys (and girls) used to be viewed as kinda cute, nerdy, idea people (by the general public),but lately I think they've started viewing them more as 'out to rule the universe types',kind of like Wall Streeters in the late '80's. So the public support might be a lot more with us these days."
N. Craig Bryant, West Hollywood, California.

"Mr. Jobs could choose to take the noble route by preserving this historic house, and at the same time, leaving a legacy. Instead, he is brazenly flaunting his financial prowess to build a monument to himself, and at the same time, upsetting his fellow Woodside residents, and those of us living in other states who care about historic preservation. I hope that a very well-heeled preservation-minded citizen will step up to the plate and save this California treasure."
Leann Sherman
West Hartford, Conn. [letter published in the Almanac, January 2005]

"... the loss of the Daniel C. Jackling residence and its secondary buildings, either through demolition or inappropriate relocation, would be a loss to the cultural heritage of the State of California and the nation."
Anthea Hartig, Ph.d, Chairperson, State Historical Resources Commission
Department of Parks and Recreation, Sacramento, California

"The Jackling House, it's definitely too good to go!"
Frank E. Sanchis III, Senior Vice President, The Municipal Art Society of New York
(preservation society helped save Grand Central Station, organized the two beams of light memorial to the World Trade Center, etc)
